Angelie: Hi everyone, I am Angelie and welcome to this week’s episode of Workplace Strategy. Today, we have invited Dr. Michelle to answer your questions in this section called ‘Workplace Strategy Forum’. Hi and welcome on air, Dr. Michelle!
Michelle: Hi Angelie and everyone here! I give thanks for this opportunity to share and interact with all of you on the air. Through this platform in Global Reachout, we hope that workplace Christians will have encouragement and support and build a workplace culture that is aligned with God’s will.
Angelie: Yes friends, if any of you have any questions about your Christian faith relating to work, we welcome you to drop us a message so that we can discuss these issues on the programme. Today, we have invited Dr. Michelle to answer a question about the criteria of choosing our jobs. Alright, to start off this session, one friend has asked if Christians should emphasize choosing jobs that are inclined towards our strengths? Would this be a crucial factor? In other words, should we prioritise selecting jobs that will display our talents in the workplace? If we do this, will other factors such as income be of secondary importance?
Michelle: This friend has asked a very important question. It is posed by a Christian whose spiritual life is progressing indeed.
Angelie: That’s right. We perceive that he takes the importance of his faith into account while choosing a job. Indeed, that is not very common.
Michelle: Indeed, he has started to focus on a biblical principle, that is “Blessings will be bestowed on us when our work is a form of service, and we excel in our spiritual gifts.” First of all, I will explore more about this principle before answering the crux of the question – that is, as Christians, what are the criteria for choosing our jobs? First, based on my experiences of interacting with different people in churches, the typical goals of most workplace Christians are to earn a living, meet their needs in life, apply what we have learnt or demonstrate our abilities. These goals are important, indeed, but they are not the purpose for working. Rather, they are the outcomes of our work.
